Feyre, Rhysand, and their friends are still busy rebuilding the Night Court and the vastly altered world beyond, recovering from the war that changed everything. But Winter Solstice is finally approaching, and with it, the joy of a hard-earned reprieve.

Yet even the festive atmosphere can't keep the shadows of the past from looming. As Feyre navigates her first Winter Solstice as High Lady, her concern for those dearest to her deepens. They have more wounds than she anticipated-scars that will have a far-reaching impact on the future of their court.

Bridging the events of A Court of Wings and Ruin with the later books in the series, A Court of Frost and Starlight explores the far-reaching effects of a devastating war and the fierce love between friends.

Author Biography

Sarah Janet Maas (born March 5, 1986) is a #1 New York Times bestselling American author who has fundamentally shaped the modern "romantasy" genre. Born and raised in Manhattan, Maas spent her childhood exploring museums and reading global fairy tales, though she often felt frustrated by the lack of fierce, compelling heroines in fantasy literature. Drawing inspiration from strong pop-culture figures like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Sailor Moon, she began writing the stories she wanted to read.

At sixteen, Maas started drafting a dark twist on the Cinderella fairy tale—imagining her not as a servant, but as a deadly assassin. She serialized the story, originally titled Queen of Glass, on the writing platform FictionPress, where it quickly became one of the site's most popular works. She continued developing her craft at Hamilton College, graduating magna cum laude in 2008 with a degree in creative writing and religious studies.

Her debut novel, retitled Throne of Glass, was published by Bloomsbury in 2012 and became a massive international hit, ultimately spanning an eight-book epic series. In 2015, Maas launched her second major series, A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR). Initially a loose retelling of Beauty and the Beast, the series transitioned her work into the "new adult" and adult fantasy spaces. The ACOTAR series became a viral sensation, largely driven by massive popularity on TikTok. In 2020, she introduced her third ongoing adult urban fantasy series, Crescent City.

With over 75 million copies sold worldwide and translations in nearly 40 languages, Maas stands as one of the most successful contemporary authors. She currently lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, whom she met in college, and their two children.

“A Court of Frost and Starlight” by Sarah J. Maas is a quieter, more emotional bridge between the main events of the original A Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy and the stories that follow. Unlike the earlier books, which are filled with war, danger, and major battles, this novella focuses on healing, rebuilding, and the private lives of the characters after the terrible war against Hybern. It takes place during the Winter Solstice in Velaris, the City of Starlight, and shows how Feyre, Rhysand, and their Inner Circle are trying to recover from everything they have lost.

The story begins after the war has ended, but peace does not feel easy. Feyre is now High Lady of the Night Court, ruling beside Rhysand. Together, they are working to rebuild their court and help the people who suffered during the war. Velaris is still beautiful, but it carries the wounds of battle. Buildings must be repaired, families are grieving, and many people are trying to return to normal life. Feyre feels the weight of leadership deeply. She wants to be useful and to give her people hope, but she is also still learning what it means to rule.

A large part of the book follows Feyre as she reflects on her past trauma and tries to find a new purpose beyond survival. For so long, she lived in fear, hunger, violence, and war. Now that she finally has love, safety, and power, she struggles with how to move forward. One of the most meaningful parts of her journey is her return to painting. Art had once been a source of comfort for her, but after everything she went through Under the Mountain and during the war, it became harder for her to create. In this book, she begins to understand that painting can help not only herself but others too. She starts imagining a space where people, especially children affected by the war, can come to paint, heal, and express their pain.

Rhysand is also shown in a more personal light. As High Lord, he is still responsible for protecting the Night Court and handling political tensions with other courts. He worries about threats that may rise again, especially because peace between the courts is fragile. Some rulers are more cooperative than others, and the human lands are still unstable after the wall has fallen. Rhys knows that the world has changed forever, and he must prepare for whatever comes next. At the same time, he wants to enjoy his life with Feyre. Their relationship is warm, passionate, and full of emotional understanding. They support each other as partners, rulers, and mates.

The Winter Solstice celebration gives the story its central mood. It is a time of gifts, family, food, laughter, and reflection. The Inner Circle prepares for the holiday in their own ways, and the book gives small glimpses into each character’s emotional state. Mor appears cheerful and loving, but she still hides parts of herself and carries her own private burdens. Amren is adjusting to life after losing much of her former power, and her relationship with Varian continues to develop. Cassian remains strong and loyal, but he is troubled by Nesta’s distance and self-destructive behavior. Azriel is quiet and watchful as always, carrying feelings he does not fully express.

Nesta’s storyline is one of the darkest parts of the book. After being turned into High Fae against her will and experiencing the horrors of war, Nesta has withdrawn from everyone. She lives alone in a poor apartment, drinks heavily, spends money recklessly, and refuses help from her sisters or the Inner Circle. Feyre wants to reach her, but Nesta pushes everyone away. Her anger and pain are sharp, and she seems unable or unwilling to heal. This creates tension, especially between Nesta and Cassian. Cassian cares for her deeply, but Nesta’s coldness hurts him. Their unresolved relationship becomes an important thread that points toward future events.

Elain, on the other hand, is quieter in her healing. She spends time gardening, baking, and trying to find peace in small routines. Though she is still changed by what happened to her, she seems more willing than Nesta to accept support. Her bond with Lucien remains uncomfortable and uncertain. Lucien visits during the Solstice, but Elain does not truly welcome him as a mate. Lucien himself is caught between worlds, no longer fully belonging anywhere. He has ties to the Night Court, the Spring Court, the human lands, and his own complicated heritage, but he still seems lonely and unsure of his place.

Tamlin also appears briefly, and his scenes are heavy with sadness. The Spring Court is broken, and Tamlin is isolated, bitter, and consumed by what he has lost. Rhysand visits him, partly out of political concern and partly because Tamlin’s collapse could create danger for the surrounding lands. Their interaction shows how far Tamlin has fallen. He is no longer the powerful, proud High Lord he once was, but a wounded figure trapped in guilt, rage, and loneliness. The book does not excuse his past actions, but it shows the consequences of them.

As the Solstice arrives, the Inner Circle gathers to celebrate. There are gifts, jokes, drinking, and moments of tenderness. These scenes show the family Feyre has chosen and the love that holds them together. Even though each character carries pain, they find comfort in one another. Feyre and Rhys share a deeply emotional moment when they decide that they want to build a future together not just as rulers, but as a family. Their love feels hopeful, symbolizing the possibility of life after war.

By the end of the novella, not every problem is solved. Nesta is still suffering, political tensions remain, and the world is still uncertain. But the story offers a sense of healing beginning slowly. “A Court of Frost and Starlight” is less about action and more about recovery, love, friendship, and finding light after darkness. It shows that surviving a war is only the first step; learning how to live again is its own journey.
