Book Description

The Dursleys were so mean and hideous that summer that all Harry Potter wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he's packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike.

And strike it does. For in Harry's second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor, Gilderoy Lockhart, a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls' bathroom, and the unwanted attentions of Ron Weasley's younger sister, Ginny.

Book Summary

J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, featuring the iconic original chapter illustrations by Mary GrandPré, is the thrilling and progressively darker second installment in the globally beloved wizarding series. The story begins during another miserable summer holiday for twelve-year-old Harry at number four, Privet Drive. His unbearable aunt and uncle have locked away his school things, and he hasn't heard a single word from his best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The silence is abruptly explained by the sudden appearance of Dobby, a frantic and deeply neurotic house-elf who has been intercepting Harry’s mail. Dobby desperately warns Harry that terrible danger awaits him at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and begs him not to return. When Harry refuses to abandon the only place that feels like home, Dobby sabotages a vital dinner party hosted by the Dursleys, resulting in Harry being locked in his bedroom with bars on the window. Fortunately, Ron and his older twin brothers, Fred and George, stage a daring nighttime rescue in their father’s enchanted flying Ford Anglia, whisking Harry away to the warm, chaotic, and magical Burrow for the remainder of the summer.

The journey back to Hogwarts, however, proves just as perilous as Dobby predicted. When Harry and Ron find themselves mysteriously blocked from entering Platform Nine and Three-Quarters at King’s Cross Station, they make the reckless decision to fly the enchanted car all the way to Scotland. Their chaotic journey ends with a spectacular crash into the violent Whomping Willow on the school grounds, nearly getting them expelled before the term even begins. Once settled into the castle, the promised danger quickly materializes. Harry begins hearing a chilling, murderous voice echoing through the walls—a voice that no one else can hear. Soon after, the school is rocked by a gruesome discovery: the caretaker’s cat is found petrified, frozen like a statue, hanging beneath a bloody warning painted on the wall. The message declares that the legendary Chamber of Secrets has been opened, and enemies of the Heir of Slytherin should beware.

The school is immediately plunged into a state of terror and paranoia. According to Hogwarts legend, one of the school’s founders, Salazar Slytherin, built a hidden chamber within the castle housing a terrible monster. This monster was meant to be unleashed by his true heir to purge the school of muggle-born students—witches and wizards born to non-magical parents. As more students are found petrified, including the usually brilliant Hermione, the threat becomes deeply personal. Suspicion naturally falls on Harry's arrogant rival, Draco Malfoy, prompting Harry, Ron, and Hermione to brew a complex Polyjuice Potion to disguise themselves and interrogate him. While they discover Malfoy is not the heir, the mystery deepens when Harry stumbles upon a blank, magical diary belonging to a former student named Tom Riddle. Through the diary, Riddle shows Harry a memory from fifty years ago, framing the beloved gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid as the culprit who opened the Chamber, leading to Hagrid's temporary arrest and the removal of Headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

With the school facing closure and the attacks escalating, the crisis reaches a breaking point when Ron’s younger sister, Ginny, is abducted and pulled down into the Chamber itself. Armed with a few crucial clues left behind by the petrified Hermione, Harry and Ron discover that the monster is a Basilisk—a giant, lethal serpent that kills with a single look, using the plumbing system to move through the school undetected. They force their painfully vain and cowardly Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Gilderoy Lockhart, to accompany them down a hidden pipe in a girls' bathroom. After Lockhart accidentally wipes his own memory with a broken wand, causing a cave-in, Harry is forced to face the Chamber completely alone. Deep beneath the castle, he confronts the true Heir of Slytherin: a magical projection of Tom Riddle, who reveals that he is the teenage memory of the dark wizard Lord Voldemort. It was Riddle who manipulated Ginny through the diary, using her to open the Chamber and unleash the Basilisk.

In a desperate, high-stakes battle, Harry is aided by Dumbledore’s loyal phoenix, Fawkes, who delivers the magical Sorting Hat. From the hat, Harry pulls the legendary Sword of Gryffindor, using it to slay the Basilisk and destroy Tom Riddle’s diary with one of the serpent's venomous fangs, thereby saving Ginny’s life and restoring peace to the school. The novel concludes with triumphant celebrations, the curing of the petrified students, and a clever maneuver by Harry to trick the sinister Lucius Malfoy into freeing the mistreated house-elf, Dobby. GrandPré’s iconic chapter illustrations perfectly capture this mystery-driven installment, adding a rich visual layer to the lore of the wizarding world.
