Book Description
AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER | OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK | A USA TODAY BESTSELLER
#1 New York Times bestselling author Wally Lamb, celebrated for two prior Oprah’s Book Club selections, returns with an exceptional third pick, an “incandescent” (Oprah Daily) novel following a young father grappling with unbearable tragedy as he searches for hope, redemption, and the possibility of forgiveness.
Corby Ledbetter is struggling. New fatherhood, the loss of his job, and a growing secret addiction have thrown his marriage to his beloved Emily into a tailspin. And that’s before he causes the tragedy that tears the family apart. Sentenced to prison, Corby struggles to survive life on the inside, where he bears witness to frightful acts of brutality but also experiences small acts of kindness and elemental kinship with a prison librarian who sees his light and some of his fellow offenders, including a tender-hearted cellmate and a troubled teen desperate for a role model. Buoyed by them and by his mother’s enduring faith in him, Corby begins to transcend the boundaries of his confinement, sustained by his hope that mercy and reconciliation might still be possible. Can his crimes ever be forgiven by those he loves?
An “immersive novel of redemption” (The New Yorker), The River Is Waiting is another “soul-wrenching” (NPR) masterpiece from celebrated author Wally Lamb.

"I was awestruck by this brilliant novel! I know that “authenticity” isn’t the sexiest takeaway, but on my honor, page after riveting page, I asked myself, “How did he know this? How is this so moving, so real, so close to the bone?” Bravo, Wally Lamb. Not that you needed another masterpiece to demonstrate your unerring eye, ear, and signature heart, but may I say The River is Waiting might crown them all.” —Elinor Lipman, author of Every Tom, Dick & Harry and Ms. Demeanor
"As usual, Wally Lamb gripped me with his perceptive, page-turning novel, The River Is Waiting, a story that illuminates how the traumas of mass incarceration and addiction stigma spare no one. Book Summary
The River Is Waiting by Wally Lamb is a profoundly moving, emotionally devastating, and ultimately redemptive novel that grapples with the absolute limits of human forgiveness. Published in 2025 and famously selected for Oprah's Book Club, the book explores the agonizing fallout of a single catastrophic mistake and the grueling journey toward self-awareness and atonement. Lamb, a master of deeply empathetic character studies, plunges readers into the darkest depths of parental grief and the brutal realities of the American penal system. At its very heart, this character-driven story asks a terrifying and universally resonant question: Can a person who has committed an unforgivable act ever be absolved by those they love, or more importantly, by themselves? It is a raw exploration of power, powerlessness, and the enduring hope that even the most broken souls can find a path to the light.
The narrative centers on Corby Ledbetter, a man whose life is slowly unraveling under the crushing weight of hidden demons. Once a successful commercial artist, Corby has recently lost his job and finds himself navigating the demanding role of a stay-at-home father to his toddler twins, Maisie and Niko. While his wife, Emily, works relentlessly to keep the family afloat financially, Corby secretly succumbs to the pressures of his new reality. He develops a dangerous addiction to prescription Ativan and alcohol, masking his inner turmoil beneath a facade of domestic normalcy. One fateful morning in 2017, this toxic combination of stress and substance abuse culminates in an unimaginable nightmare. In a moment of devastating carelessness in his own driveway, Corby accidentally backs his car over his two-year-old son, Niko. This horrifying event instantaneously destroys his family, his marriage, and his entire life.
The aftermath of Niko’s death is a suffocating portrait of guilt and fractured love. Emily is completely destroyed by the loss of her child, and the revelation of Corby's secret addiction only compounds her profound betrayal. The legal system quickly steps in to address the tragedy, holding Corby accountable for his fatal negligence. He is convicted of second-degree involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to three years in a men's prison. Stripped of his freedom, his family, and his dignity, Corby enters the terrifying world of the correctional system as a shell of a man, carrying a level of self-hatred that is almost impossible to articulate. His future with Emily and his surviving daughter, Maisie, hangs in absolute limbo, heavily shrouded by the overwhelming uncertainty of whether his marriage can ever survive such an unspeakable trauma.
The majority of the novel meticulously chronicles Corby's harrowing incarceration, offering a gritty, unfiltered look at life on the inside. Imprisoned alongside men serving much harsher sentences, Corby is forced to navigate an environment fraught with extreme brutality, danger, and despair. Yet, amidst the terrifying violence and the monotonous counting of days, Lamb beautifully weaves in unexpected threads of grace and kinship. Corby discovers that the prison walls also hold profound humanity. He forms vital connections with individuals he would never have crossed paths with on the outside. A compassionate prison librarian sees a glimmer of light within his broken spirit, while a tender-hearted cellmate and a troubled teenager desperate for guidance force Corby to step outside of his own suffocating grief. These relationships become his lifeline, teaching him that empathy can flourish in the most unforgiving environments.
Through these unlikely friendships and the unwavering faith of his mother, Corby slowly begins the arduous psychological work of genuine atonement. The novel masterfully utilizes the titular river as a powerful metaphor for justice and cleansing—a constant, flowing force that demands truth while offering the possibility of renewal. Corby is forced to confront the absolute ugliest parts of himself, recognizing how his selfish choices precipitated the ultimate tragedy. His journey is not about erasing the past, but rather learning how to carry the agonizing weight of it without allowing it to completely destroy his remaining purpose. He channels his deep remorse into a desperate hope that upon his release, he might be able to offer Emily and Maisie a truly transformed man, holding onto the fragile belief that reconciliation might just be within reach.
