Book Description

A former addict's extraordinary journey from deception and despair to faith, purpose, and courage on the front lines of America's most dangerous stories.

Ben Bergquam should have lost everything.

Addicted to crack cocaine, trapped in lies, and slowly destroying his marriage, he was living a double life that seemed destined to end in disaster. By day he was a husband, father, and businessman. By night he became "Nick"—a man consumed by addiction, secrecy, and self-destruction. Then everything collapsed. Forced to confront the truth about who he had become, Ben began a painful journey of recovery, faith, and transformation that would ultimately lead him far beyond anything he could have imagined.

Today, he reports from some of the most dangerous places on earth. From cartel-controlled territory in the Darién Gap to riots in American cities, from the U.S.-Mexico border to political flashpoints around the world, he has repeatedly stepped into situations most people spend their lives trying to avoid.

In Step into Fear, Bergquam shares the remarkable story behind the headlines and recounts his battle with addiction, the restoration of his marriage, the lessons learned through failure, and the faith that gave him the courage to pursue a calling bigger than himself. Part redemption story, part spiritual memoir, and part frontline adventure, Step Into Fear is a powerful reminder that courage is not the absence of fear—it is the willingness to move forward despite it. No matter what stands in front of you, the first step toward freedom is stepping into fear.

Editorial Reviews

No one covers the issues quite like Ben Bergquam. A great book for everyone, especially young men in our day."—Jack Posobiec, New York Times bestselling author of Unhumans

“I’ve known and worked with Ben for many years, starting on the southern border during the border crisis under Joe Biden, but I never knew his backstory. Reading this book and knowing Ben the way I know him now, it’s almost hard to believe. This book is a powerful story of God’s redemption and a reminder for all of us that it’s not too late. Beyond being a great reporter and truth teller, the quality I love most in Ben is his devotion to his wife, Villy and daughters Chloe, Olivia and Lillian. I am blessed to call him a friend. You need to read this book. It will give you hope for yourself if you’re struggling and hope for America.”—Kari Lake, American patriot

“I knew he was a good guy when my wife liked him even more than I did. Ben Bergquam has become not just a colleague but a friend to Cindy and me. He is the most tenacious on the ground reporter in America and even more than that, a damn good Patriot. The work he has done on the border and around the world to report on illegal immigration is second to none, but it pales in comparison to his love for America. I like to say that I am the best predictor of what the left will do before they do it; don’t tell anyone, but I sometimes use Ben’s reporting as inspiration. This book is more than just a biography of Ben’s journey from addiction to purpose, it is a how to guide for young patriots, wanting to make a difference for our country and God’s kingdom. I can’t recommend it any more highly. It’s got mine and Cindy’s stamp of approval.”—Wayne Allyn Root, bestselling author and host of America's Top Ten Countdown and America Speaks on Real America’s Voice TV

“Ben Bergquam’s testimony is a powerful reminder that courage is not the absence of fear, it’s the willingness to move forward in spite of it. From the depths of addiction and a double life to some of the most dangerous places on earth, this incredible journey reveals God’s hand at work, every step of the way. Ben is a warrior that I’m proud to call my friend.” —Chad Prather, host of Before the Noise

“You’ll be captivated, surprised and encouraged by what you’re about to read. Ben’s book is more than a story, it’s a collection of chapters that will incite hope, courage, and a desire to trust God for more in your own life. This book is a journey. Get ready…”—David J. Harris Jr., author and speaker
