Book Description
Simple nervous system regulation exercises to feel safer, calmer, and more present—for anyone, anywhere
For many of us, stress is baseline. Busy schedules, trauma, and chronic pressure can keep the nervous system stuck in survival mode. In Everyday Nervous System Regulation, Melissa Romano—bestselling author of the Vagus Nerve Deck—translates neuroscience into simple practices that return the mind and body to a calm and connected state. These accessible, somatic exercises help you reset in the moment while gradually retraining your nervous system to feel more grounded, less reactive, and attuned to the world around you.
Inside this book you will find:
ACCESSIBLE TOOLS: Start now—no exercise clothes required. These practices are intentionally low effort while remaining effective.
SCIENCE-BACKED STRESS RELIEF: Proven techniques to release stored tension and restore energy using the natural power of breath, movement, nature, and more.
TARGETED SOMATIC PRACTICES: Find exercises mapped to a specific experience—like anger, loneliness, or fatigue—or begin with the Emergency Toolkit that includes 10 quick resets.
STRUCTURED 7- AND 30-DAY PLANS: Turn simple practices into sustainable habits. Examples and templates provided.

Author Biography
Melissa Romano, LGSW, is a licensed social worker, neurosomatic specialist, and creator of the S.A.F.E. Method, a powerful framework for nervous system regulation. With a community of more than 1.7 million followers across platforms, she is the author of Everyday Nervous System Regulation: Simple Exercises to Reset and Recenter and the Vagus Nerve Deck.
Her work runs on a slightly rebellious idea: regulation was never about being calm. It is about staying connected to yourself, your body, your emotions, and the people around you, even when everything feels hard. Trained in integrative somatic therapy, she translates the science into plain language and helps people stop fighting their bodies and start working with them. Her philosophy is simple: you're not broken, you're protecting yourself.
Melissa is best known for disguising real therapeutic practices as viral challenges, and for speaking straight to anyone who has ever asked, what's wrong with me, why am I like this, and how do I make it stop? She works one on one with clients around the world and serves as the COO of a recovery residence for women and women with children, where this work happens in real time with people in crisis.
She lives in West Virginia with her son.

I wholeheartedly encourage you to explore them." —Arielle Schwartz, PhD, licensed clinical psychologist, pioneering somatic trauma specialist and author of nine books, most recently, The Complex PTSD Workbook for Teens: Mind-Body Strategies to Build Resilience and Heal

“In a field crowded with complexity, Melissa Romano has done something rare and genuinely useful: translated the science of nervous system regulation into language people (and their bodies) actually understand. This book meets readers exactly where they are—anxious, frozen, depleted, or simply curious—and gives them practical tools they can reach for in real moments, not just in therapy sessions. Romano's trauma-informed, whole-person approach respects the intelligence already built into our biology, offering 90 research-backed exercises that make lasting change feel possible rather than overwhelming. Whether you are new to somatic work or deepening an existing practice, this is the kind of book you'll return to again and again—not because you've failed, but because it works. Having had the opportunity to teach alongside Melissa in a recent workshop, I enthusiastically endorse every piece of advice you will find in her book.” —Emeran A. Mayer, MD, distinguished research professor, UCLA, and bestselling author of The Mind-Gut Connection
