Magnifica Humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence

With Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV offers a landmark reflection on human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence. Rooted in Catholic social teaching, this first encyclical challenges believers and all people of goodwill to ensure technology serves the human person, protects work, and advances justice, peace, and authentic solidarity.

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago in 1955, is the first Augustinian pope. A missionary in Peru for over a decade, he held pastoral and academic roles before serving as Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023.

Former Prior General of the Augustinians, he was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and made a Cardinal in 2023. Known for his humility and pastoral sensitivity, he brings North American roots and deep Latin American experience to the papacy. His episcopal motto, In Illo uno unum, reflects his Augustinian call to unity in Christ.
