Book Description

A gentle, quiet companion for anyone carrying the weight of grief.

One evening, beneath an old tree at the edge of the world, Nobil sat down beside his friend Neli and finally let himself say it:

"I miss someone… someone who isn't here anymore."

Neli didn't offer empty platitudes. She didn't try to fix his broken heart or promise that tomorrow would be easier. She simply sat beside him in the dark. She just stayed.

The Way They Carried Love is the story of two friends and one long night — from dusk to morning — spent sitting with a loss that cannot be undone.

Here, there are no stages to complete. No timelines to meet. No one telling you it is time to move on, or promising that time heals all wounds. There is only permission to feel exactly as you do.

There is only the slow, honest company of a friend who understands the terrain — and, quietly, the beautiful truth that love does not end when the person we loved is gone. You do not have to leave them behind. You only have to learn to move forward, carrying their love beside you. That love stays. That love walks with you still.

This book is for you if:

You have lost someone you love, and the world suddenly feels strange and wrong.
You are exhausted by grief books that treat loss like a problem to be solved. You don't need advice or a schedule right now; you just need to be understood.
You want a gentle place to rest on the heaviest nights — a book that will sit with you in the dark, and still be there in five years when you need it again.
You love someone who is grieving. This book is for them, too. It is a quiet, meaningful gift to offer a safe harbor when you just aren't sure what words to say.

Read it in one sitting. Read it one page at a time. Return to it whenever your heart is tired.

Whatever you have lost. Whoever you are missing so deeply. However heavy tonight feels... please know you are not alone.

It's a long way... let's walk it together.

Author Biography

Rashmi Rai is an author and illustrator who makes gentle, hand-drawn stories for grown-ups—quiet fables about the parts of being human that are too vast and deeply felt to easily put into words.

Her stories follow two lifelong companions: Nobil, an elephant of quiet depths, and Neli, a bird of grounded truth, who first appeared in the margins of her childhood notebooks and never quite left. Together, they wander through the big, tender questions of life—love and loss, fear and courage, belonging and hope—one honest conversation at a time.

She doesn't write as a guide or an expert, but as a fellow traveler a few steps down the same road. Her stories are meant to be kept close, read slowly, and returned to on the days you need them most.

She shares her journey as it unfolds—translating her own experiences, quiet observations, and gentle learnings into new drawings—alongside small moments with Nobil and Neli between stories, on Instagram and other platforms @RashmiRaiStudio.
