Book Description

Overwhelmed? Exhausted? Running on empty?

You became a teacher to make a difference.

But between lesson planning, grading, emails, meetings, student needs, parent concerns, behavior challenges, and the pressure to do more with less, it’s easy to lose sight of the passion that brought you into education in the first place.

If you’ve ever ended the day emotionally drained, wondered how you’ll keep up, or felt your enthusiasm slipping away, you’re not alone.

The good news? You don’t need a complete life overhaul to feel better.

In Happy Hacks for Teachers, family life professor, speaker, and happiness researcher Dr. Dave Schramm shares 51 simple, science-backed practices designed specifically for educators who want to reduce stress, prevent burnout, increase resilience, and rediscover joy in both teaching and life.

Drawing from decades of research and lessons learned from his own father, a dedicated 36-year classroom teacher, Dave writes with both the head of a scientist and the heart of a teacher’s son.

The 51 hacks are organized around five familiar "rooms" every educator knows: the Break Room, Supply Room, Staff Room, Classroom, and Room of Your Own. Each one opens a different door to greater happiness, energy, and well-being. Whether you have two minutes between classes or a quiet Saturday morning, there’s something in every room for you.

From boosting your mood before the first bell rings to creating healthier boundaries, strengthening relationships, and finding meaning in everyday moments, each hack is practical, realistic, and designed to fit into the busy life of an educator.

Unlike many self-help books that require hours of your time, most of these strategies can be implemented in just a few minutes a day. And they still create meaningful, lasting change.

Inside you’ll discover how to:
Protect your energy without adding more to your workload
Build resilience during challenging school years
Strengthen positive relationships with students, colleagues, friends, and family
Increase happiness and well-being through simple daily habits
Manage difficult emotions and reduce overwhelm
Create healthier boundaries between work and home
Reconnect with your purpose, passion, and why you chose teaching
Whether you’re a first-year teacher, veteran educator, counselor, administrator, or support professional, Happy Hacks for Teachers offers practical encouragement and proven strategies to help you thrive. Not just survive.

From the author of the #1 New Release Happy Hacks: 101Science-Backed Ways to Boost Happiness, Reduce Stress, and Build a More Meaningful Life, this educator-focused edition delivers practical tools and uplifting insights for those who spend their lives helping others learn and grow.

Because great teachers change lives. And great teachers deserve support, too.

Author Biography

I'm a professor, family life educator, husband, father, grandfather, and lifelong student of what helps people thrive.

For more than 20 years, I've studied happiness, relationships, parenting, and well-being. Along the way, I've discovered something important: most people don't need more information—they need simple, practical ideas they can actually use.

That's why I write books like the Happy Hacks series. My goal is to take the best research from positive psychology, family science, and human flourishing and turn it into straightforward strategies that help people feel happier, build stronger relationships, and create more meaningful lives.

I serve as a professor and Extension Family Life Specialist at Utah State University, co-host the Stronger Marriage Connection podcast, co-created the "Happy Class" at USU and I live in North Logan, Utah with my wife Jamie and am grateful every day for our children, grandchild, and the opportunities I have to help others flourish.
