Lily Ashwell is an artist, author and teacher devoted to exploring the symbolic languages of the soul through astrology, tarot and archetypal study. She is the creator of the best-selling Heavenly Bodies Astrology Deck and co-creator of Heavenly Bodies Tarot, a hand-painted tarot deck created alongside her creative collaborator, Blu of Earth.

Heavenly Bodies Tarot by Lily Ashwell, created in collaboration with Blu of Earth, is much more than a traditional tarot deck. It is presented as a deeply personal and artistic exploration of tarot, symbolism, spirituality, intuition, and the human experience. Rather than treating tarot simply as a method of predicting the future, the creators approach the cards as mirrors that can help people become more present, reflective, and aware of what is happening within them. The central idea is that the real value of tarot lies not in telling someone exactly what will happen, but in helping them look honestly at their thoughts, emotions, choices, fears, hopes, and patterns. The creators describe the work as something born from years of painting, studying, contemplating, and living alongside tarot archetypes.

The creation of Heavenly Bodies Tarot was itself an important part of its meaning. Lily Ashwell and Blu of Earth spent more than two years developing the deck, beginning in late 2023 and continuing into 2026. According to Blu, the project eventually became 78 original works of art, 78 original prayers, and a guidebook of more than 250 pages. Each card was approached with considerable time and attention rather than being produced simply as an illustration for a conventional tarot system. This long process suggests that the deck is intended to feel intimate and contemplative. The cards were not merely designed to represent familiar tarot meanings; they were created as visual and spiritual invitations to enter into a relationship with the archetypes.

At the heart of the deck are the 78 traditional tarot archetypes, but Ashwell and Blu give them their own visual and emotional language. The artwork draws inspiration from sacred places, ancient mythologies, nature, spirituality, and the symbolic traditions that have surrounded humanity for centuries. During the creation of the deck, the artists traveled and gathered inspiration from places including Glastonbury Tor, the River Nile, the Amazon jungle, and Topanga Canyon, where the complete collection of cards was eventually painted by hand. This connection between landscape, mythology, and inner life gives the deck a sense of timelessness. The cards are meant to feel connected not only to tarot history but also to the larger human search for meaning.

The Major Arcana can be understood as a symbolic journey through the major experiences and transformations of human life. These archetypes represent moments such as beginnings, uncertainty, love, conflict, courage, temptation, change, loss, revelation, and renewal. In this approach, the cards do not have to be treated as fixed predictions. Instead, they can be seen as different states of consciousness or stages through which a person may move.
